Harmony of Contrasts

This series of paintings predominately investigates themes of time and presence; each piece has evolved from the starting point of a dead flower head. The paintings are built up over several layers and explore using traditional practice when combined with modern materials, one of many different contrasts brought together for this work.

The overriding concept of the work is that as we are looking at (and discussing) the flower, it is still here, still has a presence with us.

There are several physical layers to the work including the use of relief work made from ferns – one of the longest living things on the planet, many existing species having first appeared some 145 million years ago.

The work was exhibited in Gateshead's oldest building - St. Edmund's Chapel, a 13th Century working church on Gateshead High Street.
