Once Upon a Time in China

This charcoal drawing has been made on a scroll of heavy uncoated paper and is a culmination of the most important sketches made during my time in China.

The aperture in an oak tree, which was drawn whilst in the UK during Covid, formed the foundation for bringing these drawings together as one. The drawing was made once I returned to Zhuhai.

The highly replenishable bamboo framework was sourced locally and was fascinating to work with; connecting pegs are made with the offcuts. When the bamboo skin is sanded back it leaves a beautiful light and very matt surface which I felt aligned itself well with the paper and charcoal surface.
